Sigiriya, also known as Lion Rock, is one of the most remarkable ancient monuments in Sri Lanka and a globally recognized archaeological site. It is located near Dambulla in the Central Province and consists of a massive granite rock rising approximately 200 meters above the surrounding jungle plains. Sigiriya served as a royal palace, fortress, and later a Buddhist monastery.
The history of Sigiriya dates back to the 5th century AD, during the reign of King Kashyapa I (477–495 AD). According to historical chronicles, King Kashyapa built his capital on top of this rock after seizing the throne. The summit once housed a luxurious palace complex with royal residences, gardens, and pools, while the base was protected by moats, ramparts, and elaborate water gardens.
